NORTHERN PERU

In this remote area of Peru you are going to explore America’s largest archaeological structure – Fortress Kuelap and the mysterious sarcophagus of Karajia. Hike ancient trails, high in the cloud forest, and enjoy sweeping views of the area.

Day 1.        Lima

Upon arrival in Lima, you are met at the airport and transferred to your comfortable hotel. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 2.        Lima - Chiclayo. Chachapoyas

Fly from Lima to Chiclayo. Upon arrival in Chiclayo, you are met at the airport and transferred to the beautiful city of Chachapoyas.  On the way to Chachapoyas we will stop to admire a waterfall. Overnight.

Day 3.        To Karajia.   Choctamal

We are going to see the spectacular 8-foot high funeral sarcophagus of Karajia, on a steep cliff. From there we will walk up to see more sarcophagus higher on a sheer cliff, and an ancient colonial mill.  Overnight in Choctamal Mountain Lodge with excellent panoramic views of Fortress Kuelap.  After dinner, why don’t enjoy a relaxing Jacuzzi in the Lodge.

Day 4.        Fortress Kuelap

Today we travel to Kuelap to see the largest archeological structure of South America, estimated to contain three times the building material of the Great Pyramid of Egypt. Inside its 4 and 5 levels of huge walls, are over 400 stone buildings. Orchids and bromeliads cover the walls and trees inside this impressive fortress. This "Machu Picchu of the Northern Peru" is much larger, older and more mysterious. On the way back to Chachapoyas we will also observe the burial Tower of Macro located on a cliff overlooking the Utcubamba River.

Day 5.        Chachapoyas – Chiclayo

Early departure to Chiclayo. We will see Tucume on the way to Chiclayo (time permitting). We will arrive in Chiclayo in time to catch our flight back to Lima. Overnight in Lima.

Day 6.        Lima and departure

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
