Danube Cycling
8 DAYS
Cycle along the Danube - the most famous and popular cycling
route in Europe. Immerse into a world of soft valleys, romantic villages and
majestic monasteries.
Hardly any other part of the Danube
valley offers such a variety of culture and scenery and such a density of
historical sights. Remote valleys, fertile plains and steep vineyards as well as
neat farmhouses and splendid monasteries characterize this lovely area. The
meander of the Danube at Schlögen, Melk Abbey
and the Wachau are landmarks of this bike route, which is about 350 kilometers
long.
You
will cycle on wide-open traffic-free ways next to the river. You will also enjoy
a combination of first-class gastronomy and first-class hotels. Treat yourself
to a week in quintessential Europe.
Note: You will receive a detailed cycling map with route description and
information on the area and sightseeing options with your pre-departure package.
The notes below are designed to give you an idea of each cycling day, and biking
distances in kilometers are approximate. Biking routes are well signposted. Cycling
is possible even on rainy days. Because of the short daily distances to be
covered, you will have plenty of time to visit many places of interest along the
route and/or make detours.
Day 1. Arrive in Passau
(Germany)
Individual
arrival in Passau. Check-In. Issue of bikes and travel information.
Day
2. Passau to Neufelden
(36 km by bike, 25 km by ship, 11 km by bus)
Sightseeing in Passau, a city on
three rivers, then on by boat to Engelhartszell.
You cycle along the northern bank of the Danube until you come to the
famous Schlögener Schlinge. Here you can marvel at a natural spectacle of a
very special kind. The Danube virtually flows backwards because the hard granite
forces the river into an extremely narrow bend. Continue to Untermühl.
By bus to your hotel (8 kms from the river).
Day
3. Neufelden to Linz (38
km by bike, 8 km by bus)
Back by bus to the Danube and cycle
via Aschach and Wilhering (beautiful Rococo church) to Linz. You visit Linz, the
capital city of Upper Austria, with its historical city center.
Day 4.
Linz to Perg or Grein (35 km or 58 km)
Along the Danube through the
legendary Strudengau until you reach Perg. Then on to the little Danubian town
of Grein and the oldest baroque theatre in Austria.
Day
5. Perg or Grein to
Emmersdorf (56km)
From Ybbs and
Persenbeug via Marbach to Emmersdorf.
Day
6. Emmersdorf to Krems
or Traismauer (36 km)
Cycle to Melk with its baroque
monastery that represents a unique combination of scenery, architecture and the
river. You carry on to the vineyards of the Wachau, one of Austria’s most
famous wine-growing regions. The gentle and cheerful atmosphere of the Wachau
region has been enhanced by centuries of wine growing. You cycle through Spitz,
Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein to Krems. You
really should sample some of the local produce in one of the many wine taverns.
Day 7.
Krems or Traismauer to Vienna (41 km by bike, 38 km by train)
You cycle along the southern bank of
the Danube to the former Roman town of Tulln. From there you take the train to
Vienna. In the evening you will enjoy a 4-course dinner at a first class
restaurant.
Day 8.
Vienna and departure
